Junior Citizenship Scheme
The Junior Citizenship Scheme is a multi-agency education programme that helps Year 6 pupils prepare for the transition to secondary school. Through interactive workshops, live presentations and practical activities, children explore important topics such as personal safety, road safety, health, wellbeing and responsible citizenship, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence needed for greater independence.
The scheme is bespoke to each local educational authority. But as an example, Brent JCS 2024 involved organisations including Transport for London (TfL), the Metropolitan Police, the London Fire Brigade, VIA (Brent) and Brent Council's Public Health Team, with coordination provided by Brent Council's Safety and Travel Planning Team. Approximately 2,250 pupils from 38 schools took part in the scheme held over three weeks.
A workshop based on Wizard Theatre's "Taking the Lead" bookends the scheme, using live performance, music, humour and audience participation to engage pupils in discussions about road safety and responsible decision-making. This approach was designed to deliver important messages in a way that was entertaining, engaging and respectful of the pupils' growing maturity and to cover issues in an age appropriate way including road safety, cleaner air and the environment, alongside the contributions from the various partner agencies.
The Junior Citizenship Scheme (JCS) is an educational programme designed for Year 6 pupils as they prepare to move from primary to secondary school and begin making more independent decisions. The scheme brings together a range of local services and specialist organisations to help young people learn practical life skills that will support their safety, wellbeing and confidence.
Wizard Theatre developed 'On the right road' for us several years ago as part of a bespoke project, this proved so popular that although the project is now complete we continue to offer this to our schools. The pupils really enjoy the performance and find it easy to relate to the characters: Craig & Jonna. It is great for promoting road safety and sustainable travel and the key messages make pupils think about the way they travel to school and the advantages/disadvantages of their school journey. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to promote sustainable travel in a fun and interactive way.

Thank you both for such an engaging and informative workshop. The children and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was really inclusive and fun. It was particularly useful to enable them to explore peer pressure/preference (and choices) as they are preparing for their transition to secondary school.
